Welfare Considerations

Wild collection of marine aquarium fish involves multiple welfare insults: cyanide exposure or physical capture stress, confinement in small containers during transport through multiple holding facilities, and placement in artificial aquarium environments with very different conditions from coral reef habitats. Species collected from great depths undergo rapid decompression injuries. Cyanide-caught fish that survive initial capture often die within weeks from internal organ damage.
