Shrimp are among the most consumed seafood globally, farmed by the billions annually. Evidence suggests they may have pain experience, making slaughter methods and farming conditions an urgent welfare issue.
Shrimp welfare represents one of the highest-stakes frontiers in animal welfare given the extraordinary scale of production. If shrimp are sentient - and the evidence, while contested, suggests they may have some form of pain experience - then the welfare harm of current production and slaughter practices is staggering in its scale. Even a 50% probability of sentience, applied to hundreds of billions of individuals, yields an expected welfare impact of enormous magnitude under any reasonable ethical framework. Electrical stunning technology exists and has been shown effective. The barriers are economic and awareness-related. Shrimp Welfare Project's approach of working directly with shrimp producers to implement stunning is a pragmatic and impactful strategy given the regulatory challenges of international shrimp supply chains.
