Golden eagles require vast territories and are increasingly threatened by wind turbine collisions, making careful siting of renewable energy infrastructure critically important for conservation.
Wind turbine strikes cause acute trauma and death. Eagles are particularly vulnerable because their foraging behavior - scanning downward while soaring - reduces awareness of approaching turbines. Beyond direct mortality, the presence of turbines can displace eagles from core foraging areas, reducing food intake and reproductive success. Siting wind farms away from eagle flight corridors and implementing detection systems represent the most effective welfare protections.
