Dairy goats are often considered a small-scale or humane alternative to dairy cattle, but intensive systems create similar welfare challenges that require attention.
The welfare challenges of dairy goat production mirror those of dairy cattle: abrupt cow-kid separation causes distress in both mother and offspring, continuous pregnancy-lactation cycles are physiologically demanding, and intensive housing systems often deny goats their strong motivation to climb, explore, and interact with complex environments. Goats are particularly vocal when stressed - the distress calls of recently separated does and kids are clearly audible and emotionally communicative. Welfare-positive systems acknowledge these needs and seek compromises.
