Enforced box rest for injury rehabilitation is a significant welfare challenge for horses, requiring active management of psychological wellbeing alongside physical recovery.
Box rest creates a welfare dilemma: physical healing requires movement restriction but psychological wellbeing requires activity. The welfare cost of prolonged box rest includes development or worsening of gastric ulcers, behavioral deterioration, muscle loss, and chronic stress. Active management of box-rested horses requires maximizing safe stimulation: deep shavings for lying comfort, ad libitum hay for behavioral occupancy, companion contact across a stable door, regular hand-walking when permitted, and environmental enrichment including mirrors and novel objects.
