Perch provision significantly improves welfare for laying hens in enriched colony systems, but design features including diameter, material, and height critically affect uptake and benefit.
Perch design is not trivial: round perches can cause keel bone fractures when hens land on them, and narrow gauge perches cause foot deformities. The EU welfare directive's 15cm minimum is insufficient for normal perching behavior for most breeds. Higher welfare systems including free-range and barn systems provide elevated, appropriately sized perches that allow natural roosting behavior and predator avoidance postures, significantly improving behavioral need satisfaction compared to cage systems.
