Osprey populations have recovered dramatically through conservation efforts including nest platform provision and reduced organochlorine pesticide use, offering a model for raptor recovery.
Osprey conservation provides welfare benefits at the individual level through reduced contaminant exposure and protection of nesting sites. Nest platform provision directly prevents egg and chick loss from unsuitable natural nest sites. Monitoring programs detect injured adults and failed broods, enabling intervention. However, recovery does not mean all welfare challenges are resolved: fishing line entanglement, lead poisoning from fish bait, and wind turbine collision remain ongoing individual welfare threats.
