Mustelid Welfare in Captivity: Otters, Martens, Ferrets

Mustelids - the weasel family - have high activity requirements and specific behavioral needs that make them challenging to house well in captivity, requiring specialized welfare approaches.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Mustelids housed in insufficient space or with inadequate enrichment rapidly develop stereotypies and show signs of chronic stress. The high activity levels of wild mustelids cannot be replicated in typical zoo or pet enclosures without deliberate design. Ferrets as pets are often kept in cages too small for adequate movement and without tunneling enrichment they strongly prefer. Zoos maintaining otters, martens, or weasels must provide both aquatic access for species requiring it and extensive above-ground complexity for arboreal species.
