Captive Elephant Welfare: Space and Social Needs

Elephant welfare in captivity is among the most intensively studied and debated welfare issues in zoology, with space requirements and social complexity driving fundamental questions about justifiable captivity.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Elephant welfare in traditional zoo settings is genuinely difficult to achieve - the species' space requirements, social complexity, and cognitive capacity make adequate provision enormously resource-intensive. The question of whether elephants can have good welfare in captivity has no single answer: some facilities with large naturalistic spaces, stable social groups, and excellent keeper relationships achieve reasonable welfare; most facilities do not. Conservation value cannot justify poor welfare conditions. Sanctuaries and accredited facilities with demonstrably high standards represent the appropriate reference point.
