Cat Polycystic Kidney Disease Welfare and Management

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a hereditary condition most common in Persian cats that causes progressive kidney failure and chronic welfare consequences requiring careful management.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

PKD represents a preventable inherited disease that causes chronic suffering across a cat's middle and later life. As cysts enlarge and kidney function declines, cats experience nausea, decreased appetite, weight loss, and the cumulative burden of chronic kidney disease. The disease is entirely preventable through responsible breeding: DNA testing and excluding carriers from breeding programs has already significantly reduced PKD prevalence where implemented. Breeding organizations that require negative PKD status protect future kittens from inheritable suffering. For affected cats, early diagnosis and proactive management of chronic kidney disease significantly extends good quality of life.
