Running wheels are essential for hamster welfare but the wrong type or size causes serious harm - understanding hamster exercise needs prevents unnecessary suffering.
The running wheel is not an optional accessory for hamsters but a welfare necessity. Hamsters are obligate runners with deeply evolved motivation to cover extensive distances nightly. This motivation does not disappear in captivity - it simply becomes frustrated when adequate running opportunities are absent. A hamster without a proper wheel in a small cage is profoundly welfare-compromised. The welfare problems compound when wheels are the wrong size (causing back damage) or the wrong surface (causing foot injury). Pet shops frequently sell inadequate wheels as though they are appropriate. Providing a large, solid-surface, species-appropriate wheel is one of the cheapest and highest-impact welfare improvements available to hamster keepers.
