Companion Turtle UV Lighting and Welfare

Companion turtles require specific UV-B lighting to synthesize vitamin D3 and metabolize calcium - incorrect lighting causes metabolic bone disease and serious welfare consequences.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Metabolic bone disease in turtles is entirely a human-caused welfare failure resulting from inadequate lighting provision. A turtle developing soft shell syndrome is experiencing progressive skeletal damage that causes chronic discomfort and eventually prevents normal function. The tragedy is that appropriate UV-B provision from day one prevents this disease completely. The pet industry often undersells or misrepresents lighting requirements, and UV-B bulbs frequently continue to look functional while providing inadequate radiation. Turtle keepers must understand that providing appropriate UV-B is not optional enrichment but a fundamental requirement for turtle health. Regular bulb replacement on schedule, not based on visual appearance, is critical.
