Horse Rider Position and Back Welfare

Poor rider position and balance create asymmetric loading on the horse's back that causes musculoskeletal problems and pain, making rider training a welfare issue.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Rider position is a horse welfare issue that is rarely discussed because it implicates the rider rather than equipment or management. However, the biomechanical reality is clear: an unbalanced rider sitting heavily to one side, gripping with the lower leg, or bouncing in an insecure seat creates ongoing back loading that causes muscle pain and spinal stress in the horse. The horse that resists contact, bucks, or shows reluctance under saddle may be communicating rider-caused discomfort rather than disobedience. Rider training investment is therefore a welfare investment - improved position, balance, and independent hands directly reduce the physical burden imposed on the horse during ridden work.
