Laminitis is one of the most painful and debilitating conditions in horses. Acute episodes require immediate intervention to prevent permanent damage and minimize suffering.
Acute laminitis is a genuine veterinary emergency involving extreme pain. Horses with severe acute laminitis may be unable to walk and shift weight constantly to relieve agony. The condition can become chronic, with horses experiencing persistent low-grade to moderate pain for months or years. The welfare implications are severe: a horse in chronic laminitis that is not being adequately managed for pain is experiencing significant ongoing suffering. Euthanasia may be the most humane choice for horses with severe rotation or sink where quality of life cannot be maintained. Owners, veterinarians, and farriers must work together with welfare as the primary consideration.
