Wild Rabbit Territory Management and Welfare

Wild rabbits live in complex social territories with sophisticated behavioral needs. Understanding rabbit social ecology helps inform both conservation and domestic rabbit welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Wild rabbits face substantial welfare challenges from both natural and human-caused sources. Myxomatosis, spread by fleas and mosquitoes, causes a gruesome and prolonged death with swelling, blindness, and respiratory failure over 1-2 weeks. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease causes rapid internal hemorrhage. Predation, while natural, causes fear and pain in the final moments. Agricultural pest control, including gassing of warrens, causes mass deaths of entire social groups. The welfare of wild rabbits is rarely prioritized in land management decisions. Humane management approaches that avoid prolonged suffering - rapid killing methods where control is necessary - represent a meaningful welfare improvement over extended disease or poisoning deaths.
