Layer Hen Welfare: Enriched Cages vs Cage-Free

The egg industry is undergoing a major transition from conventional battery cages toward cage-free systems. Understanding the welfare implications helps consumers make informed choices.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The battery cage debate often becomes polarized, but the welfare science is nuanced. Conventional battery cages prevent virtually all natural behavior and cause severe psychological and physical welfare compromise. Enriched cages improve slightly on the most egregious restrictions but still confine hens in ways that prevent full behavioral expression. Cage-free systems allow more natural behavior but introduce different welfare challenges: higher rates of keel bone fractures from falls, greater disease transmission, and increased feather pecking in large flocks. Pasture-raised systems, despite their own management challenges, most closely match the behavioral needs of domestic hens. The welfare trajectory is clear: away from cages toward systems allowing locomotion, nesting, perching, and foraging, but implementation quality varies enormously.
