Wild Deer Fence Entanglement Prevention

Agricultural and garden fencing causes injury and death to wild deer annually. Simple fence design modifications dramatically reduce entanglement risk and suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Deer fence entanglement causes severe suffering. A deer caught in wire fencing panics and struggles, often worsening the entanglement and causing deep lacerations that cut through to bone. If not discovered quickly, entangled deer die from exhaustion, dehydration, or blood loss over hours to days. Even when freed, leg injuries may be severe enough to require euthanasia. The suffering during entanglement - fear, pain from lacerations, exhaustion from struggle - is intense and prolonged. This is an area where small design changes make a large welfare difference: appropriate fence heights, smooth wire at the top of barriers, visible markers on wire fencing, and regular inspection of fence lines near deer habitat can significantly reduce entanglement risk.
