Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is closely linked to stress. Understanding the stress-disease connection helps prevent recurrent episodes and chronic welfare compromise.
Feline idiopathic cystitis causes genuine pain and distress. Affected cats strain repeatedly to urinate and pass only drops, often crying from discomfort. Blood in the urine is common. In male cats, urethral obstruction - a potential consequence - is a veterinary emergency causing extreme pain and death within 24-48 hours if untreated. The stress-disease connection means that cats in chronically stressful environments - inadequate resources, conflicts with other cats, environmental changes - are at significantly elevated recurrence risk. Treating the acute episode without addressing the underlying stress management provides temporary relief but allows continued chronic vulnerability. Environmental modification - resource provision, enrichment, reduced conflict - directly addresses the welfare factors driving recurrence.
