Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Animal fighting causes some of the most extreme and deliberate animal welfare abuse. Animals bred for fighting undergo selective breeding for aggression, training methods that use pain and deprivation, and then repeated exposure to violent combat. Fighting cocks have their natural wattles and combs removed and are fitted with blades - each fight is intended to end in one bird's death. Dogfighting victims survive repeated severe injuries including puncture wounds, broken bones, and internal hemorrhage. Animals that lose fights are killed by their owners or allowed to die of untreated injuries. The psychological trauma to fighting dogs is severe - many require months of patient rehabilitation before basic trust can be established. The welfare harm is both acute and cumulative across the animal's lifetime in the fighting enterprise.
