Gastrointestinal stasis is a life-threatening emergency in rabbits that kills within 24-48 hours without intervention. Recognizing the early signs and acting immediately saves lives.
GI stasis causes acute, severe pain and deteriorates rapidly without treatment. A rabbit in GI stasis is experiencing extreme abdominal discomfort from gas pressure and organ dysfunction. The gas produced by bacterial fermentation of stagnant gut contents causes pain equivalent to severe intestinal cramping. Without intervention, gas accumulation causes increasing pain, the rabbit stops drinking and eating entirely, and organ failure follows within 24-48 hours. Owners who delay seeking treatment for a rabbit that has stopped eating, believing it will 'sort itself out,' often lose their pet in hours to days. The welfare imperative is immediate veterinary contact for any rabbit showing appetite loss, reduced fecal output, or hunched posture - these are emergency signs, not minor concerns.
