Pig Welfare and Enrichment: Practical Implementation

Pig enrichment is legally required in many jurisdictions but poorly implemented. Understanding what actually works helps farmers and advocates push for meaningful improvement.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pig enrichment implementation is a gap between legal requirement and welfare reality. The provision of a single hanging chain for dozens of pigs technically satisfies legal enrichment requirements in some jurisdictions while providing almost no actual welfare benefit - pigs habituate to it within days and it does not address the rooting and foraging drives that, when frustrated, drive tail biting and aggression. Effective enrichment engages natural behaviors: rooting substrates (straw, compost, peat) satisfy investigation and foraging drives that are the primary causes of redirected behaviors. Novel items that are changed regularly maintain behavioral engagement. The challenge is that high-quality enrichment using organic material creates slurry management difficulties in liquid-manure systems. System-level solutions - moving toward straw-based bedding - would resolve the management barrier while delivering the welfare benefit.
