Farmed Snail Welfare

Snail farming (heliculture) is growing globally, but the welfare status of gastropod mollusks and appropriate farming standards require consideration.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Snail welfare sits in uncertain territory. Snails have ganglionic nervous systems far simpler than vertebrates - their capacity for pain as traditionally understood is debated. However, they do show nociceptive responses (reactions to tissue damage) and basic learning that suggests some form of aversive experience is possible. Given the uncertainty, the precautionary principle suggests that slaughter methods that minimize potential suffering are preferable. Traditional slaughter by hot water immersion or salt application may cause prolonged stimulation of nociceptors if snails have any capacity for pain experience. Rapid killing methods that immediately destroy the nervous system would minimize any potential suffering. The relatively small scale of snail farming and the modest probability of significant sentience make snail welfare a lower priority than many other areas, but not entirely negligible.
