Rooting is one of pigs' most fundamental behavioral drives. Providing appropriate rooting opportunities dramatically improves welfare and reduces damaging behaviors.
The rooting drive in pigs is one of the strongest and most consistent behavioral motivations in the species. Pigs deprived of rooting opportunities experience ongoing motivational frustration that is expressed in redirected behaviors - rooting at pen walls, slatted floors, or pen mates. The vacuum rooting behavior (rooting motions performed on bare concrete without any manipulable substrate) is a clear indicator of behavioral frustration - the behavior is performed despite providing no satisfaction. Providing manipulable rooting materials is among the most welfare-positive interventions available in pig housing - the behavioral engagement straw and other substrates provide reduces frustration, stereotypic behaviors, and aggression while allowing expression of a core behavioral drive. The management challenge of straw in liquid slurry systems is real but solvable through system design.
