Rabbits are among the most commonly kept pets and among the most commonly surrendered to shelters. Poor understanding of their needs results in widespread welfare problems in domestic rabbit populations.
Pet rabbits suffer disproportionately due to misunderstanding of their needs. They require large living spaces, social companionship, access to unlimited hay, and opportunities to dig and explore. Hutch housing, isolation, and improper diets cause chronic suffering. Educational campaigns about rabbit needs have improved welfare in countries where rabbit welfare organizations are active and accessible.
