Every Animal Matters: The Individual Welfare Perspective

In a world of billions of animals, it is easy to focus on populations and statistics. The individual welfare perspective reminds us that each animal's experience matters in its own right.

Welfare Considerations

The scale of animal agriculture makes it psychologically natural to think in abstractions: billions of chickens, millions of pigs, global suffering statistics. But each of those billions of individuals has a life that matters to them - each has moments of comfort or discomfort, engagement or frustration, fear or security. The individual welfare perspective insists that we not allow statistical thinking to dissolve the moral weight of each individual's experience. A single chicken in a cage is experiencing something real and morally significant, regardless of the number of chickens around her. This perspective is demanding because it forbids the comfortable abstraction that large numbers invite, requiring us to hold the reality of individual experience even at enormous scale.
