Ospreys were severely impacted by DDT-induced reproductive failure in the mid-20th century but have made dramatic recoveries. Their welfare today is affected by nest disturbance, fishing line entanglement, and emerging chemical pollution concerns.
Individual osprey welfare is most acutely threatened by fishing gear entanglement. Ospreys that catch fish and become entangled in fishing line suffer from restriction that prevents flight and feeding, leading to starvation over days to weeks. Recovery requires wildlife rehabilitation care that is stressful for a naturally wary species. Nesting disturbance by humans - whether from recreation, photography, or construction - causes acute stress responses and nest abandonment, leading to failed breeding attempts and chick starvation. Lead poisoning from fishing tackle causes neurological impairment similar to that seen in lead-poisoned eagles - progressive weakness, seizures, and death. The welfare implications of each threat differ, but all cause preventable suffering.
