Dog Heat Stroke: Prevention and Emergency Welfare Management

Heat stroke is a preventable emergency that kills thousands of dogs annually, primarily from being left in hot cars. Understanding its welfare impact and prevention is critical for dog owners.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Heat stroke causes rapid and intense suffering. A dog's body temperature rising above 41C causes cellular protein denaturation - essentially, cooking the animal from the inside. The experience includes extreme distress, respiratory distress as panting fails to cool the body, and progressively worsening organ dysfunction. Dogs experiencing heat stroke show panic, disorientation, and collapse before losing consciousness. Survivors of severe heat stroke may have permanent neurological damage, chronic kidney disease, or clotting disorders that affect quality of life indefinitely. The preventable nature of virtually all heat stroke deaths - through simple owner awareness - makes each case a welfare tragedy that should not have occurred.
