Laying hens across all production systems face common and system-specific welfare challenges. Understanding the welfare profile of each system helps consumers make informed choices and advocates target improvements.
Laying hen welfare cannot be reduced to a simple cage vs. cage-free binary. Each production system creates a specific welfare profile with characteristic strengths and challenges. Battery cages prevent exercise, natural movement, and behavioral expression; they also reduce feather pecking and disease transmission. Cage-free barn systems allow more behavioral expression but have higher rates of keel bone fractures and feather pecking. Outdoor free-range and pasture systems provide the most natural behavior expression but expose hens to weather, predators, and disease. The highest-welfare systems combine outdoor access with genuine pasture, slower-growing genetics, meaningful stocking densities, and effective management of feather pecking and bone health. No commercial system eliminates all welfare concerns.
