Farmed Crayfish Welfare

Crayfish are farmed in large quantities for food but receive minimal welfare protections despite growing evidence of their capacity to experience pain and stress.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Crayfish welfare exists in a legal and ethical gray zone - most jurisdictions do not include them in animal welfare legislation. Scientific evidence increasingly supports their capacity for pain-like experiences and stress responses, yet they are routinely killed by live boiling or freezing without any attempt at humane slaughter. High-density farming causes aggression and physical injury. Growing scientific consensus is shifting attitudes, with the UK's Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 recognizing decapod crustaceans as sentient. More welfare protections are urgently needed.
