Diabetes mellitus is increasingly common in cats, but with proper management many diabetic cats achieve remission and live comfortable lives.
Uncontrolled diabetes causes significant suffering through hyperglycemia, dehydration, and the painful neuropathy that causes hindlimb weakness. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency requiring intensive care. However, well-controlled diabetic cats can live comfortable, active lives. The requirement for twice-daily insulin injections and glucose monitoring is demanding for owners, and inadequate management leads to preventable suffering. The high rate of diabetic remission achievable with early intervention and appropriate diet makes proactive management highly worthwhile. Prevention through maintaining healthy weight is the ideal approach.
