Nutritional management is a cornerstone of chronic kidney disease treatment in cats, profoundly affecting quality and length of life.
Cats with CKD experience nausea, reduced appetite, lethargy, and progressive systemic illness as kidney function declines. The transition to therapeutic kidney diets can itself cause stress if not managed sensitively - forcing diet change in sick cats may cause food aversions that worsen nutritional status. Quality of life assessment must balance the benefits of dietary restriction against the distress of feeding a diet the cat refuses. Palliative approaches that prioritize comfort and appetite may be appropriate in advanced disease where aggressive management provides minimal benefit.
