Equine metabolic syndrome predisposes horses to laminitis - a painful and debilitating foot condition that is a leading cause of horse euthanasia.
Laminitis causes excruciating pain - horses shift weight repeatedly trying to find a comfortable position and become reluctant to move. Chronic laminitis with pedal bone rotation causes permanent structural changes that require ongoing management. The suffering in acute laminitis episodes is severe and immediate. Many horses are euthanized because chronic laminitis makes adequate pain control impossible or because owners cannot maintain the intensive management required. Prevention through diet management is far preferable to treating established laminitis. Horse owners should understand EMS risk factors and act before laminitis develops.
