Wild Stork Conservation and Reintroduction

White storks were extirpated from much of Western Europe but reintroduction programs are restoring populations across the continent.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Storks electrocuted on uninsulated power lines die immediately or suffer severe burns and wing injuries. Birds feeding on landfill ingest plastics and contaminants that cause digestive obstruction and toxicity. Habitat degradation that reduces natural prey forces storks to travel greater distances for food, increasing energy expenditure and reducing breeding success. Chicks that do not fledge successfully before the migration season may starve or be unable to complete migration. Reintroduced storks face all these challenges while also being unfamiliar with traditional migration routes, requiring careful management support.
