Arena footing quality is a critical but often overlooked welfare factor determining injury rates in competitive and leisure horses.
Horses competing or exercising on poor footing suffer immediate welfare consequences from slips, falls, and increased tendon and ligament strain. Concussion from hard footing contributes to osteoarthritis development over a career. Deep footing increases muscle fatigue and tendon loading. The FEI has developed footing standards for international competitions, but training facilities often operate without formal standards. Financial barriers to proper footing installation and maintenance in amateur facilities mean many horses train on surfaces that unnecessarily increase injury risk. Owner and trainer education about footing quality is an underappreciated welfare intervention.
