Sea Otter Welfare and Marine Ecosystem

Sea otters are keystone species of kelp forest ecosystems whose welfare is intertwined with the health of one of the ocean's most productive habitats.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sea otters oiled in spills suffer from hypothermia as their dense fur loses insulating capacity when saturated with oil. They ingest oil during grooming, causing internal damage. Oil spill rehabilitation of otters is labor-intensive and not always successful. Otters injured by boat strikes, fishing gear entanglement, or shark attacks receive care from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and other facilities, but survival rates for severely injured animals are limited. The ecological role of sea otters in maintaining kelp forests benefits the welfare of the thousands of species that inhabit this productive habitat, from fish to invertebrates.
