Technology-based monitoring systems are improving slaughter welfare by providing objective, continuous assessment replacing infrequent spot checks.
The slaughter process - even in well-regulated facilities - involves fear, pain, and distress for billions of animals annually. Most welfare violations occur because there is inadequate oversight at the point where animals are most vulnerable. CCTV monitoring has demonstrably improved compliance with welfare regulations by creating accountability. Automated monitoring systems that never fatigue and can simultaneously assess entire facility operations represent a significant advance over infrequent human spot checks. Transparency measures including consumer-facing welfare ratings create market incentives for improvement. Technology cannot eliminate slaughter welfare harm but can substantially reduce the worst violations.
