Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Welfare

Sea turtle rehabilitation programs rescue and treat thousands of injured turtles annually, using evidence-based protocols to improve survival and welfare outcomes.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sea turtles suffering cold-stun hypothermia experience progressive weakness, loss of coordination, and eventual unconsciousness as their core temperature drops. Recovery requires gradual warming - rapid rewarming causes further tissue damage. Turtles with boat strike injuries experience significant pain from fractured shells and soft tissue wounds. Fibropapillomatosis causes debilitating tumor growth that impairs vision, movement, and feeding. Rehabilitation is stressful and labor-intensive, but the alternative for severely injured animals is death. The quality of rehabilitation - including pain management, appropriate nutrition, and gradual acclimation before release - directly determines post-release welfare and survival.
