Precision livestock farming uses sensors and data analysis to monitor individual animals, enabling early detection of health problems and welfare improvements.
Precision livestock farming technology has genuine potential to reduce animal suffering through earlier disease detection and intervention. The 1-3 day advance warning provided by activity monitors for lameness allows treatment before pain is severe. Rumination monitoring catches metabolic disease before cows become critically ill. These welfare benefits align with economic benefits - treated animals have better production outcomes. However, PLF technology can also enable higher stocking densities and reduced human contact that may undermine the welfare benefits of early detection. The technology is most welfare-positive when it supplements rather than replaces meaningful animal observation by trained farm staff.
