Barn Owl Conservation and Welfare

Barn owls are declining across much of their range due to rodenticide poisoning and habitat loss, affecting both populations and individual animal welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Barn owls dying from rodenticide poisoning experience internal hemorrhaging and lethargy as anticoagulant compounds prevent blood clotting. Secondary poisoning through eating rodents exposed to rodenticides affects raptors and other predators throughout the food chain. Traffic mortality causes traumatic death from vehicle strikes along roads where barn owls hunt. Cold winter starvation causes a slow decline as prey becomes unavailable and body condition deteriorates. These welfare harms are largely preventable - rodenticide-free pest control, wildlife-friendly road barriers, and barn owl box programs all provide practical interventions.
