Overgrown nails cause chronic pain and mobility problems in dogs, yet nail trimming remains one of the most neglected aspects of dog care.
Dogs with overgrown nails walk on altered posture that strains tendons, ligaments, and joints over time. The discomfort of walking on nails that curve back toward the paw is chronic and progressive. Dogs with dark nails are particularly prone to having the quick cut during trimming, causing pain that creates lasting nail-trimming aversion. Many dogs that seem 'difficult' during nail trims are reacting to previous pain - a behavior that can be changed through patient desensitization. Regular trimming from puppyhood prevents the behavioral and physical problems that develop when nails are neglected.
