Nutritional management for dogs with cancer supports quality of life during treatment and may affect disease outcomes.
Dogs with cancer face nutritional challenges from reduced appetite, treatment side effects, and the metabolic demands of both the cancer and the immune response to it. Maintaining adequate nutrition is critical for quality of life and treatment tolerance - malnourished patients have worse outcomes and reduced ability to tolerate chemotherapy. However, forcing food on dogs that are nauseated or have mouth pain causes additional distress. Nutritional management that uses anti-nausea medication, appetite stimulants, and highly palatable foods to maintain voluntary intake optimizes both welfare and outcomes. The quality of life during treatment - not just length of survival - is the appropriate welfare metric.
