Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a painful spinal condition common in certain dog breeds, causing significant suffering and sometimes permanent paralysis.
IVDD causes acute and sometimes chronic pain. Dogs experiencing disc herniation often cry out, guard their spine, and resist movement. The fear and confusion of sudden partial or complete paralysis adds psychological distress. Even with surgery, recovery involves weeks of strict cage rest and physiotherapy. Dogs that don't recover function may still live comfortably with mobility carts, but quality of life requires careful management. The preventable nature of high-risk breeding makes this a significant welfare concern.
