Wild Dolphin Strandings and Welfare

Dolphin and whale strandings cause significant suffering for individual animals and represent a growing welfare challenge as ocean noise pollution, entanglement, and disease drive more strandings.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Stranded dolphins experience acute welfare crises. Dehydration progresses rapidly on the beach. Without the buoyancy of water, their own body weight compresses internal organs. Skin burns from sun exposure occur within hours. The confusion and fear of being out of their element, combined with whatever illness or injury caused the stranding, creates extreme distress. Most stranded dolphins that reach human help are already severely compromised, and despite dedicated rescue efforts, mortality remains high. Preventing the causes of strandings is the most effective welfare intervention.
