Wild Songbird Window Strike Welfare

Window strikes kill up to 1 billion birds annually in the US alone, representing one of the most significant and preventable sources of bird injury and death caused by human structures.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Window strike impact causes acute physical trauma - skull fractures, brain hemorrhage, internal bleeding, and broken bones. Birds that appear merely stunned may actually be concussed with internal injuries that kill them hours later when they resume flying. Birds that survive initial impact but are injured face starvation, predation vulnerability, and inability to complete migration. For migrating birds, even non-fatal delays can prevent them from reaching breeding or wintering grounds in adequate condition. The preventable nature of this massive mortality makes it a priority welfare issue.
