Wild Crocodilian Welfare and Trade

Crocodilians are farmed in large numbers for leather and meat, with wild populations also facing collection pressure, while individual animals in captive conditions face significant welfare challenges.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Crocodilians in commercial farms are housed at densities and in conditions far removed from their ecological requirements. Thermoregulation is critical for crocodilians as ectotherms - inadequate temperatures impair digestion, immune function, and behavior. Overcrowding causes aggression and injury. Farm crocodilians cannot perform natural territorial or social behaviors. Slaughter methods on commercial farms frequently lack effective stunning - crocodilians may be skinned alive or experience prolonged death. Recognition of crocodilian cognition makes their welfare in these conditions an increasing ethical concern.
