Vulture populations are crashing globally due to poisoning, persecution, and habitat loss, threatening the ecosystem services they provide while causing immense individual suffering.
Vulture deaths from poisoning are prolonged and agonizing. Diclofenac and other NSAIDs cause visceral gout - uric acid crystal deposition throughout internal organs - causing extreme pain before death over hours to days. Lead poisoning causes neurological deterioration, loss of coordination, inability to fly or feed, and eventual death. Electrocution from power lines causes severe burns. Individually, these birds experience profound suffering. The collapse of vulture populations also has indirect welfare effects - increased disease transmission from unscavenged carcasses affects other wildlife.
