Dog Vestibular Disease and Welfare

Sudden vestibular disease causes dramatic symptoms including severe vertigo, falling, and nystagmus in dogs, causing distress despite usually being a self-limiting condition.

Welfare Considerations

Vestibular disease causes acute, intense distress. The sudden onset of severe vertigo is terrifying - dogs cannot walk, their eyes rapidly flick back and forth involuntarily, and they often vomit from nausea. Without understanding what is happening, affected dogs are extremely frightened. The acute phase, lasting 24-72 hours, involves profound disorientation and inability to function normally. Though most cases resolve fully, the acute welfare cost is significant and often undertreated. Prompt anti-nausea medication, gentle nursing care, and reassurance dramatically improve the welfare experience.
