The vast majority of farmed turkeys in the US live in barren industrial warehouses that prevent all natural behavior, with selective breeding making them increasingly incapable of normal locomotion.
Commercial turkey welfare suffers at multiple levels. The extreme growth rates selected over decades have created birds whose bodies cannot support normal function - hearts fail, legs collapse, and breathing is labored. The barren industrial environment prevents every natural behavior: dust bathing, foraging, perching, and social choice are all impossible. Beak trimming causes acute pain and chronic phantom pain in a proportion of birds. The intelligence of turkeys makes their impoverished environment a source of genuine behavioral frustration across their short lives.
