Pyometra is a life-threatening uterine infection affecting unspayed female dogs that causes severe systemic illness and is entirely preventable through early spaying.
Pyometra causes progressive systemic suffering. Affected dogs develop lethargy, excessive thirst and urination, abdominal distension, and vomiting as bacterial toxins cause widespread organ damage. By the time pyometra is recognized, many dogs are critically ill. Emergency surgery carries risks from anaesthesia in a compromised patient. The preventable nature of this condition - through a simple elective procedure - makes every pyometra case a preventable welfare event. Dogs experiencing untreated pyometra suffer significantly before death.
