Cat Glaucoma Pain and Management

Glaucoma causes severe ocular pain and rapid vision loss in cats, requiring urgent treatment to preserve both vision and comfort, and remains significantly underdiagnosed.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Glaucoma causes severe, persistent ocular pain - the pressure within the affected eye causes a headache-like sensation that is constant and debilitating. Cats with acute glaucoma may hide, stop eating, and lose interest in their environment from the intensity of the pain. The rapid progression means cats can become blind within hours to days of onset. Even after vision is lost, the eye continues to cause pain unless treated or removed. Enucleation, while permanently removing the eye, is often the most welfare-positive outcome as it eliminates the pain source entirely.
